Key Points
- $474,974 appropriated from the tax levy for FY27 health services
- New parent-newborn support service program launched through fund reallocation
- Member concerns raised regarding the impact of level funding on public health capacity
Milton Town Meeting members authorized an appropriation of $474,974 from the tax levy to fund health and sanitation services for fiscal year 2027. During the second night of the annual meeting, Precinct 2 Member Lori Stillman spoke in favor of the budget, specifically highlighting a new parent-newborn support service program created through the creative reallocation of existing funds by the health department.
Stillman noted that the new program is designed to allow nurses to visit the homes of families with newborns to ensure a healthy start in life. However, she expressed concern that current funding levels only permit four hours of nursing visits per week. Stillman pointed to a recurring cycle of level funding between tax overrides as a limiting factor for the town's public health innovation, stating that while the program is a vital start,
the department's ability to support such initiatives remains constrained.
Motion: That the town appropriate the amounts shown in the following tabulation under the heading recommended FY27 as set forth in the warrant and that to meet said appropriation, the sum of $474,974 be raised from the tax levy.
