Town Meeting Approves $60,000 Budget Increase to Fund Upcoming Special Election

Key Points

  • $60,000 appropriated from free cash
  • Funding specifically for the Nov. 4 special election
  • Prevents budgetary "scrambling" from other departments

Milton Town Meeting members voted overwhelmingly to approve Article 1, which increases the town's election and registration budget by $60,000. The funds, drawn from the town's free cash reserves, are specifically designated to cover the costs of the special election for the Select Board scheduled for November 4, 2025.

Chair of the Warrant Committee Jay Funling explained that the funding was a logistical necessity regardless of the vote's outcome, as the election is already mandated. This article allocates $60,000 to pay for the election, which will be held one week and one day from now, Funling said. If this article does not pass, we'll have to scramble and get money from a different budget.

Select Board Chair Ben Zul also spoke in support of the measure, noting the importance of ensuring the town’s financial records remain accurate by placing the election costs in the proper line item rather than drawing from emergency or unrelated accounts.

Motion: To amend the appropriations voted by the annual town meeting by increasing the amount appropriated under Article 10 for the election and registration budget by $60,000 from free cash.

Vote: Passed 204-1-0
