Expanded Tax Exemptions Proposed for Seniors, Veterans, and Disabled Residents

Key Points

  • Article 35 would increase existing tax exemptions for specific eligible populations.
  • The move is intended to mitigate the impact of the recent tax override on seniors and veterans.
  • The Warrant Committee supports the measure despite the direct reduction in town revenue.

In the wake of last year’s historic tax override, Article 35 proposes increasing property tax exemptions for vulnerable populations. The article would provide additional relief to qualifying seniors, veterans, and disabled residents as allowed under state law.

Warrant Committee Chair Jay Funling acknowledged that while providing relief reduces the total revenue available for town services, the committee felt the support was necessary. For every $10,000 provided in relief, that's $10,000 less the town has. We think it's worth it to provide relief to these people, Funling said, noting the financial pressure some residents have felt following the 2025 override.
