Milton Authorizes Vose School Site for New Library in 162-14 Vote

Key Points

  • Authorizes 3.29 acres at the Vose School site for a new library
  • Required and received a two-thirds majority vote
  • Abutters expressed concerns regarding lawsuits and site conditions
  • A proposed five-year reversion amendment was defeated

Town Meeting members voted overwhelmingly to authorize the use of the Vose School site for the construction of a new Milton Public Library under Article 19. The approved plan involves three parcels totaling 3.29 acres, including the Vose School site and Thatcher land. The decision required a two-thirds majority to pass due to the transfer of town-owned land.

The Chairperson of the Library Study Committee explained that the site was chosen for its central location and ability to accommodate a 36,000-square-foot building and 70 parking spaces. However, the proposal faced pushback from some neighbors. A member from Precinct 4 noted they had received a letter from 26 concerned abutters, warning, This site will cause lawsuits. The $30,000 will be flushed down the toilet if neighbors win a lawsuit. Concerns were also raised regarding the potential presence of asbestos at the site, though the committee assured members it would be handled properly during construction.

An attempt to amend the motion to include a reversion clause—returning the land to the Board of Selectmen if construction did not begin within five years—was defeated after Town Counsel and the Board of Selectmen warned it could jeopardize state grant criteria. The Board of Selectmen emphasized the importance of the project, stating, We owe future generations what past generations gave us. The final vote of 162 to 14 secured the site for the Library Trustees.

Motion: To transfer the Vose School site land to the Library Trustees.

Vote: Passed 162-14
