Town Meeting Refers Telecommunications Bylaw Amendment Back to Selectmen for Study

Key Points

  • Article sought to remove a five-year permit limit for cell towers
  • Selectmen requested further study after companies expressed willingness to comply with current limits
  • The referral back to the board was passed unanimously

Town Meeting members voted unanimously to refer Article 27, a proposed amendment to the town's telecommunications bylaw, back to the Board of Selectmen for further review. The article originally sought to remove a five-year permit limit currently imposed on telecommunications facilities within Milton.

Selectman Mary McCetrick explained that the Board initially proposed the change out of concern that the five-year restriction might discourage companies from siting facilities in town or lead to legal appeals. However, McCetrick noted that during a recent Planning Board hearing, representatives from two telecommunications firms indicated they were willing to proceed with applications even under the existing five-year term limit.

Consequently, the Board of Selectmen requested that the article be withdrawn from immediate consideration. Warrant Committee Member Glenn Pavlochek formally moved to refer the matter back to the Selectmen, stating it was their request to study the issue further before taking action.

Motion: To refer Article 27 back to the Board of Selectmen for further study.
