Town Meeting Sets Aggressive Climate Goals to Qualify for $10 Million in Grants

Key Points

  • Sets 50% reduction target by 2030 and Net Zero by 2050
  • Unlocks eligibility for up to $10 million in state grants
  • Non-binding resolution that maintains local discretion

Milton has officially committed to significant greenhouse gas reduction targets following the passage of Article 4. The article authorizes the Select Board to adopt communitywide goals in alignment with the Massachusetts Climate Roadmap Act, targeting a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050.

Climate Action Planning Committee Chair Alex Hasha explained that while the goals are non-binding, they are essential for the town’s financial future. Passing this would help Milton qualify for the climate leader communities program, which could provide up to $10 million in grants between now and 2050, Hasha told the meeting. He noted that the town retains full discretion on future investments and that the goals will be measured with a town inventory update every five years.

The Warrant Committee recommended the article, noting that it provides general guidance for prudent, economical ways to reduce emissions without locking the town into specific, mandatory actions. Hasha confirmed that Milton joins a growing list of Massachusetts communities, including 19 towns that achieved similar certification earlier this year.

Motion: To authorize the Select Board to adopt communitywide greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals and measure progress by updating the town's inventory no less than once every 5 years.
