Town Hall and Fire Headquarters Set for Solar Panel Installations
Key Points
- Authorizes solar panel and battery storage leases at Town Hall and Fire Headquarters.
- Expected to save the town approximately $24,000 annually at the Fire HQ site.
- Contractual safeguards included for roof warranties and energy production targets.
Milton Town Meeting has cleared the way for solar energy installations at the municipal complex on Canton Avenue. Article 39 authorizes the transfer of land for the purpose of leasing space for solar panels and potential battery storage, primarily focusing on the roof of the Fire Headquarters.
Town Administrator Nicholas Milano addressed concerns from Member Roxanne Musto regarding the safety of storage facilities and the risk of roof leaks. Fire Headquarters and the animal shelter were designed to be solar-ready,
Milano stated, assuring members that installers would be required to meet roof warranties. He estimated that the installation at the fire headquarters could generate annual savings of approximately $24,000 for the town. Milano also clarified that maintenance issues for these systems are the responsibility of the provider under Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
Member Joseph Kern inquired about the town's ability to monitor energy production. Milano responded that the town actively monitors production targets and has previously received compensation when providers failed to hit those targets. The article required and received a two-thirds majority for the land transfer and lease authorization.
Motion: That the town vote to approve the article as printed in the warrant.
Vote: Passed 179-14-4
