Town Overhauls Committee Structure and Renames Information Technology Department
Key Points
- Data Processing Study Committee renamed to Information Technology Committee
- Inactive committees for Community Center and East Milton Environments dissolved
- New staggered three-year terms established for Audit and IT committees
Article 9 sparked a detailed discussion on the future of Milton’s standing and study committees, resulting in the dissolution of several inactive groups and the modernization of others. The most significant change was an amendment proposed by member Steve Morash to rename the Data Processing Study Committee. Would it be possible to have the warrant committee change the name of the Data Processing Study Committee to the Information Technology Committee?
Morash asked, a motion that was accepted and passed by the body to reflect modern technical standards.
The Article also saw the discharge of the Community Center Study Committee, the Permanent Insurance Committee, and the East Milton Environments Committee. Responding to concerns from Martha Kemp about the loss of the East Milton group, Warrant Committee Chair Glenn Pavlovich explained that the committee had not met in years and that its responsibilities were being absorbed by a newer study committee. Pavlovich also confirmed that none of the dissolved committees had remaining funds in their accounts.
In addition to the discharges, Town Meeting voted to extend the terms of the Audit, Information Technology, and Recreational Facility committees. These groups will now operate with staggered three-year terms to ensure continuity of leadership. A proposed amendment by Peter Mullen to change the appointing authority of these members was ruled out of order by Moderator Robert Hiss, who noted it exceeded the scope of the original warrant article.
